The Infamous Mop

Iam going to approach this write up a little different. All the Mop Fly write ups I've come across on the internet are always trying to plead their case as to why, or why not the Mop should be shunned. I'm not going to get into that argument. Instead, i'm going to focus on how I like to tie the pattern and, hopefully, the people that would like to give the pattern a shot can find a helpful tutorial for a durable Mop Fly.
The biggest tip I can give is that, in my experience, I find that applying the Mop to a bare hook shank with Fly Tyers Z-Ment to be the most durable method. I've also tried tying the mop to the entire top of the hook shank. While I believe that method fishes fine, I've had much better luck with the method shown in the tutorial durability wise.
I'll end with this. It is no "silver bullet" fly. I've had great days on the mop and days where it didn't catch a feeesh on it, just like every other fly I've fished 😉. I get that using a material that wasn't made specifically for fly tying can bother some but, at the end of the day, neither was Antron...
