Split Case PMD Nymph

he Split Case PMD has been a staple in most western waters for many many years for good reason... It just plain works. I remember when we first got them in our shop, I had placed about 4 dozen of them in the bin thinking that they would last us a while, well, they lasted about 8 hours because the local guides found out that we had them in stock and they promptly took them all. The critical part of this fly is the yellow wing case that mimics a PMD nymph that is about to hatch. While the adult mayfly is a vibrant yellow, the nymph is different shades of brown, and they get darker the closer they get to the hatch. Another key to this fly is that it uses yellow foam for the wingcase. I've tried about every yellow product on the market, but there is nothing quite as bright as foam for this one. Give this one some practice, and you'll have a box full of them in no time!

This fly is commonly fished from size 20 to 16.
