Near Nuff Sculpin
Cheech - October, 2021
Near Nuff is about as good as it gets when you are talking about fly patterns. If you have a fly that works "well-enough," you have a fly that has found a permanent spot in your box. Fish are simple creatures, and if a fly looks "near enough" they will probably eat it just as fast as they'll eat a realistic fly that took a hour to tie. Dave Whitlock; legendary fly tyer, fisher, and artist, came up with this fly to represent a sculpin that would work for trout, smallmouth, panfish, and even carp. It's definitely a successful pattern because it's been around for a long, long time! We made a couple slight tweaks to this fly with the TMC 708 hook and a dubbing loop head. These are most commonly found in olive and tan, but feel free to modify them to match the sculpins where you live. Also, if you don't want to tie them, they are available for sale HERE
